There are just so many magical locations to make a marriage proposal in the Lake District - which shouldn't be a surprise as it inspired such passion from the romantic poets - Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey! Here are a few ideas to get you started on finding the perfect spot for your own proposal - which also make great locations for a SurpriseProposal Photoshoot.

The Lakes

It's not called the Lake District without reason! There are at least sixteen beautiful lakes and countless smaller 'tarns' in the Lake District, each of which offers one or more romantic settings for a marriage proposal.

Some of my favourite spots - all of which are just a short walk from a car park - include the Lanthwaite Wood end of Crummmock Water, Rayrigg Bay on the East side of Windermere, the meadow next to the steamer pier at the southern end of Ullswater, Friar's Crag on Derwentwater and the northern end of Rydal Water.

There are also a few islands on some of the lakes - such as St Herbert's Island on Derwentwater, which can be accessed by hiring a boat - or why not propose while out on the water - just don't drop the ring!

The Fells

Above the lakes, there are over 200 fell tops to choose from for your proposal moment. While the highest peaks - including Scafell Pike, Skiddaw and Helvellyn at over 900 metres - offer perfect spots for the more adventurous to propose, there are plenty of more accessible options with stunning, panoramic views and clear paths to follow, if the high peaks aren't for you.

For example, Orrest Head above Windermere, Rannerdale Knotts overlooking Crummock Water and Latrigg with views of Derwentwater and Keswick are all within a short walk from a car park.

Wedding Venues

The Lake District is one of the busiest wedding destinations in the country, with so many beautiful venues to choose from. These many lakeside venues make perfect places for a proposal - perhaps with a view to a future wedding?

Storrs Hall on Windermere enjoys two lake aspects and offers many spots in its grounds for a secret proposal, including a gazebo, jetty and lakeside folly - the Temple of Heroes. Not far away, the Gilpin Lake House offers another beautiful setting with its own small tarn, boat house and rowing boats for guest's use - perfect for a romantic proposal.

Other beautiful lakeside venues include the Inn on the Lake in Glenridding, Cragwood Country House Hotel and Langdale Chase on Windermere and the Daffodil Hotel in Grasmere.

Hidden Gems

Along side all the other beautiful locations are some stunning, less well known visitor attractions, from historic sites and caves, to castles and stately homes.

Some favourite locations worth considering include Rydal Hall with it's summer house and waterfall, nearby Rydal Cave overlooking Rydal Water, the majestic ruin of Lowther Castle near Penrith, Wray Castle on Windermere with its boat house and extensive grounds, Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick and Cathedral Cavern in Little Langdale.
